Editor's Notes
We received the following feedback on the article "Pinewood Derby Race Organization" from Volume 7, Issue 12, March 5, 2008: From Bob Hodgeman - Pack 959, Monroe, OH "While I always enjoy reading these newsletters, this one in particular will get filed away for next year's derby. The suggestions for running a successful derby are MUCH appreciated!! My son and I are involved in a pack that is growing by leaps and bounds and is struggling to put the proper leadership foundation in place to cope; the pinewood derby is just one area where we have struggled. I took over the event this year and all of the parents and leaders have lauded it as the most well-run in recent years, but we definitely have room for improvement. I'm sure these tips will be very valuable as we plan next year's derby. Thanks for all of the effort that I'm sure goes into these newsletters, I look forward to every one of them!" From David Fengler "It’s great that you have time to setup the night before or earlier in the day. Unfortunately, not all of us are so lucky. Most Cub Scout Packs in our area are sponsored by schools. We are given a window of 6 PM to 9 PM on our night. Setup the night before isn’t possible because the gym is used and open to all of the kids at the school. So we rush to setup from 6:00 PM to 6:30 PM, check-in at 6:30, race at 7, finish by 8:30, and clean up before 9. I also started an Open Class two years ago. As you can imagine, this is a bit crazy!! I’ve suggested a test and tune night a week before, but the leaders aren’t interested. I have the track and all the pinewood derby equipment. I’m probably the only person in the Pack that takes this (too) seriously. Trophies are awarded the following month and are custom engraved with the event, rank, place and scout's name. This is a bit unconventional, but adds a personal touch. Keep up the good work on the Pinewood Derby Times newsletter!"
