Editor's Notes
From Stan Pope: In the article answer to the question, "When checking for the Center of Gravity, is that done with the wheels on or off?" (Volume 6, Issue 9 - January 23, 2007), you wrote: "The center of gravity is checked with the wheels on, and with all added accessories and weight." A more complete answer requires determining of what system you are finding the center of gravity (actually center of mass - CM). The whole car is the usual answer because that tells about the potential energy available at the starting line. But, you may also be interested in the CM of the un-weighted car, because that dictates what you can accomplish with reasonable weighting. You could even want to 'reverse engineer' from the CM of known weights, sizes, and locations of wheels, axles and ballast units to derive the characteristics of the wood body that needs to be supplied. To help with questions like this, I put together a flexible program that performs CM-related computations. It is different from most programs in that the computations are 'multidirectional', i.e., you supply what you know or what you want to achieve, and the program computes what it can from the supplied information. The program is implemented as a JavaScript on my web site. The use of JavaScript helps avoid the use of potentially virus-carrying executables, and runs on most platforms. It also allows the curious to see exactly how the computations were performed (just look at the source for the web page).
