Steel Weight - 3 ounces
for Pinewood Derby Cars

These Steel Weights are an environmentally friendly, inexpensive weight for pinewood derby cars. They are more dense and less expensive than zinc weights, but not as dense as lead or tungsten.

Here is a comparison of the relative density of weight types. Density is measured in grams/cm3. A higher number means that the weight is more dense, and will take less space on a pinewood derby car.

Density Type Cost Per Ounce Comment
7.0Zinc$1.82Sold under the brand name "PineCar"
7.7Steel$0.98
11.3Lead$0.74Toxic if taken internally
18.0 to

Tungsten$2.95 to

The density varies depending on the amount of other metals included in the alloy. The cost varies based on the form.

How to Use this Product

These Steel Weights measure 3/16 x 3/16 x 1-1/4 inches, and weigh 0.19 ounces each. Your 3 ounce shipment of Steel Weights contains sixteen pieces.

These weights are generally applied to pinewood derby cars by creating one or more pockets on the bottom of the car to accomodate the weight. The weights are then glued in place with epoxy. These Steel Weights are very hard, so do not plan to drill or cut them. Instead, use an alternate method to make fine adjustments such as tungsten putty, tungsten beads, screws, etc.
