Most races allow the wheels to be lightly sanded, while some races allow more extensive wheel modifications. These operations are performed by placing a wheel in a drill. The tool used to hold the wheel is a wheel mandrel. We offer two wheel mandrels.
Pro-Wheel Mandrel
A precision-machined tool to accurately hold the wheel in the chuck of a drill. Benefits include:
Accurately machined shaft allows for precision use in any drill chuck or Dremel-type tool.
Step-down on shaft allows BSA wheels to be mounted with the 'spokes' facing the drill chuck, simplifying work on the inside edge of the tread.
Knurled thumb screw eliminates the need to use a screwdriver to mount a wheel (a clumsy operation with the standard mandrel).
Beveled thumb screw ensures that the wheel mounts accurately on the mandrel.
Screw can be replaced should it be lost or bent.

Wheel Tools
Accurate wheels produce speed! Here are several tools to help you prepare competition-quality wheels.
Pro-Hub Tool
The Pro-Hub Tool is a precision machined device to improve the accuracy of the inner wheel hub. The tool performs the following important wheel preparation functions:
Ensures proper axle fit by reaming undersized wheel bores (great for wheels that don't fit on the mandrel!).
Ensures accurate rotation by squaring the inner wheel hub to the wheel bore for proper mounting on a Wheel Mandrel.
Reduces the wheel hub to car body braking effect by accurately and easily coning the inside wheel hub.
Note: The Pro-Hub Tool is required for the Pro-Outer Hub Shaver (Part 5115) and the Pro-Wheel Shaver XT II (Part 5154).
Pro-Outer Hub Shaver
The Pro-Outer Hub Shaver is a precision machined device to improve the accuracy of the outer wheel hub. The tool performs the following important wheel preparation functions:
Ensures accurate rotation by squaring the outer wheel hub to the wheel bore for proper mounting on the Pro-Wheel Mandrel.
Improves wheel hub to axle head contact by eliminating flaws on the outer wheel hub.
Reduces axle to wheel contact by removing the two step recess on the outer hub.
Note: The Pro-Outer Hub Shaver is intended for use on BSA wheels. It is not intended for use on wheels by other manufacturers.

On Saturday we won our third consecutive District Championships! How often does that happen? Anyway, we certainly couldn't have done it without Maximum-Velocity. All of the Pro-Tools have proven to be simply invaluable. The Pro-Hub Tool and Pro-Body tools were particularly useful. In addition, my brother and I placed 1st and 2nd in the adult derby after the race. We had so much fun that I think we decided to do the adult derby again next year (unless, of course, they run me out of town on a rail)! Gavin C. - February 7, 2006

Pro-Wheel Shaver XT II
The Pro-Wheel Shaver XT II is a precision device that will 'shave time' off your pinewood derby runs by:
Creating a wheel which is perfectly round, and true to the wheel bore.
Truing the inside edge of the wheel by removing molding marks and excess material.
For more accuracy and ease of use, the Pro-Wheel Shaver XT II is equipped with a screw-adjustable blade depth! Just turn the knob to raise or lower the blade.
Notes:
A Pro-Hub Tool (Part 5110) is required to use the Pro-Wheel Shaver XT II.
The Pro-Wheel Shaver XT II is intended for use on wheels made of a hard plastic, such as those included in kits offered by BSA, PineCar, Royal Rangers, S&W, and Royal Ambassadors.
The Pro-Wheel Shaver XT II is not intended for use on wheels made of a soft plastic, such as those offered by Awana and PinePro.
An 1/8 inch bushing (Part 5159) is required for wheels with a 1/8 inch diameter wheel bore. This includes Royal Ranger and S&W kits. The bushing is not required for official BSA kits, PineCar kits, and other kits with nail axles.

Precision Wheel Balancer
The Precision Wheel Balancer will improve the speed of your pinewood derby car by identifying the heavy side of your pinewood derby wheels so that the excess weight can be removed from the inside of the tread. This results in a perfectly balanced wheel that will spin true.
Notes:
The Precision Wheel Balancer is intended for use on wheels with a smaller bore such as those from BSA, PineCar, etc. It is not intended for use on wheels with a large bore such as those from Royal Rangers and S&W.
The Precision Wheel Balancer is most effective on non-lathed wheels, or non-precision lathed wheels. For precision-lathed wheels, such as those we offer, the balancer will allow you to make subtle adjustments on some of the wheels.
Pro-Bore Polisher
The Pro-Bore Polisher will improve the speed of your car by reducing friction inside the wheel bore.
Eliminates plastic debris and minimizes flaws inside the wheel bore
Polishes the wheel bore to a high shine
Includes industrial-quality plastic polish

5180 Pro-Bore Polisher & Wheel Bore Polish In Stock $9.95
|
The Pro-Bore Polisher is intended for wheels with larger bores including Awana, PineCar, and Royal Ranger/S&W wheels.
For wheels with smaller bores, including BSA wheels, use the Wheel Bore Polish with a pipe cleaner. This product can be found Here. |
Axle Extraction Pliers
The Axle Extraction Pliers greatly simplify removing nail or pin axles. The curved and grooved jaws of the Axle Extraction Pliers provide strong but even gripping power on the axle head, minimizing the risk of damage to the axle, and giving maximum leverage to the user. Just grasp the axle head and gently remove the axle with a twist-and-pull motion.

5136 Axle Extraction Pliers In Stock $19.95
|
From Randy:
"These Axle Extraction Pliers are custom-designed specifically for removing pinewood derby axles. They make removing axles a breeze even when the axles have been pressed in closer than the recommended gap setting! These pliers should be in everybody's pinewood derby tool box." |

Pro-Axle Press II
The Pro-Axle Press II will improve the speed of your pinewood derby car by performing three critical procedures on nail type axles:
Axle Straightening - Ensures accurate wheel tracking by creating absolutely straight axles. Improved wheel tracking equals greater speed!
Axle Rounding - Ensures accurate wheel rotation by creating absolutely round axle shafts. Improved wheel rotation equals greater speed!
Head Squaring - Ensures proper wheel rotation by squaring the axle head to the axle shaft. Improved wheel rotation equals greater speed!
Head Beveling - Reduces the contact surface with the outside wheel hub. Less contact equals faster speed!
and an added bonus:
Raised Wheel and Alignment Adjustments - When it is necessary to purposely bend an axle (to raise a front wheel or make an alignment adjustment), the Pro-Axle Press II serves as a handy clamping device for holding the axle while making the bend.
Note:
The Pro-Axle Press II was designed and tested for use on BSA and PineCar nail-type axles. It may also be suitable for nail axles from other kits. The press is not intended for use with rod-type (Awana) or screw-type (Royal Rangers) axles.

5130 Pro-Axle Press II In Stock $16.95
|
From Randy:
"When using nail-type axles, the Pro-Axle Press II and Pro-Body Tool II work together to make a well-aligned and smooth rolling car." |
|
Pro-Rail Rider Tool
The Pro-Rail Rider Tool works with the Pro-Axle Press II to put a precise bend in an axle for alignment adjustment and/or for running with angled axles. When coupled with the Rail-Rider™ alignment technique, significant performance improvements can be achieved.
Notes:
A Pro-Axle Press II (Part 5130) is required to use the Pro-Rail Rider Tool.
The Pro-Rail Rider Tool will implement either a 1.5 degree or a 2.5 degree bend in an axle.
Pro-Axle Guide
The Pro-Axle Guide will improve the speed of your pinewood derby car by ensuring accurate mounting of axles:
Axle Insertion - Ensures accurate mounting of axles (in axle slots) to improve alignment. Accurate alignment is critical for top speed!
Wheel-to-body Spacing - Establishes the correct gap between the wheel hub and car body. The proper gap minimizes car wander and reduces excess contact between the car body and the wheel hubs.
and an added bonus:
Reduced Risk of Block Damage - During the insertion process the Pro-Axle Guide provides support to the wood around the axle slot, minimizing the risk of damage.
Notes:
The Pro-Axle Guide was designed and tested for use when installing wheels/axles on BSA and MV kits. However, it can be used as a gap gauge on other kits.
A hex key is supplied with the tool to loosen/tighten the screw on the tool.

5149 Pro-Axle Guide In Stock $9.95
|
"We recently purchased the Pro-Axle guide. This was our third derby event and our son's first victory. My son made the design free hand (a truck) and cut the design on a scroll saw. I aligned the wheels using the axle guide and added the weight. To our surprise, the truck won every race! When the parents raced their vehicles, the car I made beat the rest of the parents' cars. Everything from building and the weight placement were the same as the last two years. The only difference this year was using the Pro-Axle Guide. It's a great tool at a reasonable price." Axle Install Support
The Axle Install Support simplifies installing axles and setting the gap between the wheel hub and the car body. Due to the design of most pinewood derby wheels, it can be difficult to set the proper gap. On many wheels, including BSA, Awana, and Pinecar, the recess of the wheel's sidewall prevents the axle from being fully inserted.
The Axle Install Support solves this issue. The support provides a concave post to support the head of the axle while pressing the axle into place. The Axle Install Support can be used with or without the Pro-Axle Guide.
Notes:
The Axle Install Support will work with any kit that uses nail-type axles. It is not intended for use with kits using screw type axles, or rod axles with hub caps.

From Randy:
"I have installed many sets of axles, both on my kid's cars, and on cars at our local workshops. In order to make it easy to insert the axle all the way, I made a protype Axle Install Support. It really simplified inserting axles, so I decided to offer the product to you. I believe you will find this to be a great tool for use with or without the Pro-Axle Guide." |

Pro-Body Tool II
The Pro-Body Tool II will improve the speed of your pinewood derby car by:
Axle Slot Preparation - For kits with axle slots, the Pro-Body Tool II ensures accurate axle positioning by allowing you to drill accurate axle pilot holes into the existing axle slots with a hand drill!. The pilot holes ensure that the axles are mounted square and true on the car. Improved axle mounting accuracy equals greater speed!
Axle Hole Drilling - For races which allow axle holes, the Pro-Body Tool II serves as a guide for drilling accurate axle holes with a hand drill. Again, improved axle mounting accuracy equals greater speed!
Raised Hole - The third hole (Part 5140 and 5145) allows a raised hole to be drilled for running on three wheels.
Axle Hole Re-drilling - For kits with the screw and 3/8" dowel rod axle system, the Pro-Body Tool (Part 5148) allows you to accurately re-drill the axle pilot holes.

Pin Vise
This handy manual drill is great for pinewood derby cars. It accepts drill bit sizes from 1/64 to 3/32 inch (a #44 bit works great), and allows easy rotation of the bit. Unlike many pin vises with small handles, the large wooden handle fits comfortably into your hand, and allows more firm pressure on the bit. You can use the pin vise to:
Drill Axle Holes - On soft woods, use the Pin Vise with a Pro-Body Tool to drill accurate holes without damage to the Pro-Body Tool.
Clean out or open up axle holes - Are your axle holes too tight, or did paint clog the holes? The Pin Vise provides an easy way to open up holes without compromising the accuracy of the hole.
