Weight
To achieve top speed, your pinewood derby car must weigh-in at the maximum allowable weight (generally 5 ounces). Lead weight is approximately 1.8 times denser than the zinc ("lead-free") weight sold by other vendors, thus it allows you greater freedom in designing your car. An added advantage is that lead is quite soft, thus it can be easily shaped to fit in the best location on the car. Click Here for a weight comparison chart.

Do you want the density of lead, but don't want to worry about the risks? Then try Tundra. Tundra is formulated with tungsten to provide the same density as lead, but at a lower cost than tungsten itself. It can be easily cut, drilled or sanded to shape.

Due to its very high density Tungsten is an excellent weighting material for pinewood derby cars. Only gold, platinum, and a few other rare and expensive metals have a similar density. Tungsten is about 1.7 times denser than lead and 3.2 times denser than the zinc ("lead-free") weight often used on pinewood derby cars, thus it allows a tremendous amount of freedom in the car design. "Tungsten rounds allow the placement of the bulk of the ballast weight at the desired point. But if the round makes your car too heavy, your options are few. The adjustable round solves this issue by allowing nearly 1/2 ounce of weight flexibility. Leave the slot facing outward, then add one or two tungsten cubes, and tungsten putty as needed to adjust the weight. Just make sure to use epoxy to hold the cubes in place." |

"Making fine adjustments to the weight of your car is quite simple with Tungsten Putty. Simply press a small amount into a cavity or hole in the car. Since the putty doesn't harden, just remove some of the putty to reduce weight. However, if you need a quick 2 ounces, these underbody plates can be quickly attached to the bottom of a car with the supplied screws. The weight of the plate can be adjusted by breaking the plate at the score lines with a pair of pliers.
