Pinewood Derby Car Showcase – September 29, 2017

Today we have a selection of ducted fan cars.

Red Bull – Travis Burkhardt

I added substantially more efficiency with the addition of a thrust tube. A Red Bull can is a perfect fit for the 40mm fan unit, 9V battery, front nose switch included. Total car weight of 5.0 ounces and all dimensions, axles, and wheels stayed within BSA standard rules. First Place finish and track record at 2.2 seconds.

Batmobile – Brian Amato

I decided to go for both form and function with my version of the propeller car kit. Of course I won the parent’s outlaw race!!!

Blown Away – Dennis Bjorn

I wanted to build a ducted fan car that didn’t show all the components. So I built “Blown Away”. The capacitors are inside the body. The car weighs 3.6 ounces. Running on a 35 foot Best Track my best time was 1.56 sec at 315 mph (scale speed).

Outlaw – Mike Henkelman

The “Outlaw” car was built for demonstration heats in the upcoming pinewood derby season. It features a ducted fan jet engine with a functional hood scoop, eight side air scoops, a mesh windshield (air scoop), and lithium polymer 11.1 volt batteries.

Pinewood Derby Car Showcase – September 22, 2017

Today’s showcase cars are from Maynard Hinton.

Batmobile & Dick Dastardly – Samantha Hinton

My daughter Samantha’s Batmobile took first in design and speed. The next year her second car, Dick Dastardly, took first in design and second in speed (by only 1 thousandth of a second).

Hershey Bar – Terie Hinton

Out of all the cars my wife Terie has made, the Hershey bar had the best results. It took both second in speed and design in the adult division at our Awana Grand Prix.

The Mythbuster – Maynard Hinton

I made this car from a design I saw at a derby car building class. I went the next step further after watching MythBusters when they showed how a golf ball would fly farther and faster because of the dimples that are on the ball. So I used my Dremel tool to make dimples all over the car to test that theory. Unfortunately, I had to shave the inside of the fenders because they were rubbing on the rails. Long story short, the car was pretty quick, but not as fast as I had hoped because I got sawdust in the front axles from the late modification.

New Products

Here are a few highlights:

ImageImageImage
New Car Kits: We are introducing three new car kits: the Dominator, the Funny Car, and the Truck. The Dominator is an aggressive, bone-shaped car that sports a 3.5 ounce tungsten canopy. Using rail-riding alignment, this extended wheelbase car will offer top performance.

Our Funny Car and Truck kits are more traditional, to allow you top performance and style. The Funny Car is also available bundled with speed wheels, speed axles, and Max-V-Lube.

Weight: In addition to our 1 inch diameter rounds, we now offer a 1-1/4 inch diameter tungsten round which is thinner than our other rounds to allow for lower-profile cars.

We also added 1/16 ounce tungsten cylinders, which are included in our Incremental Tungsten Cylinders. This smaller weight allows for finer tuning when using cylinders.

Air Guides: Popular in the league racing circuits, Air Guides are clear plastic domes which mount to the side of the car to improve air flow around the wheels. With Air Guides installed, aerodynamic drag can be reduced by as much as 20 percent.

Additionally, we have added five new dry-transfer decals from PineCar.

Pinewood Derby Car Showcase – September 15, 2017

Here are two cars that I built for an Outlaw Race …

Pharodox – Randy Davis

Pharodox was modeled after a Hot Wheels car by the same name, and was raced in April of 2012. It is equipped with Super Stock Needle Axle wheels that had the sidewalls customized on a CNC machine. The car was quite fast, taking 2nd behind a car with X-Lite Needle Axle wheels.

Lightning Bolt – Randy Davis

In 2012 we moved our local race from spring to the fall (two races this year), so I didn’t have much time to work on a second car. Instead I used the photo model for the Lightning Bolt, which was a kit we sold for several years. I equipped the body with Needle Axle Wheels (white – a special order item), and our Needle Axle Upgrade Kit. The pattern on the sidewalls was cut out of sticky-back vinyl with a Cricut machine by my wife (thanks honey!). I’m sure the vinyl added a touch of weight, but it didn’t matter as the car handily won the Outlaw race.

… and two cars from another entrant in the race.

Finn McMissile – Richard Larson

In spring of 2012, Richard modeled Finn McMissile from the movie “Cars”. The only non-wood parts are the dual mirrors, which came from a model car kit. Finn took first place in design.

Red – Richard Larson

In the fall of 2012, Richard modeled the fire engine known as “Red” from the movie “Cars”. Red weighs exactly 5 ounces, and actually has a small amount of ballast weight. The blue tubing represents a stream of water as Red is watering the flowers. It detaches for the actual race. Not surprisingly, Red took first place in design.

In 2011 Richard modeled ‘Mater. You can see it in the Car Showcase Here.

Pinewood Derby Car Showcase – September 7, 2017

Today’s Car Showcase was supplied by Joesin Guillory.

We had purchased plans and supplies from Maximum Velocity years ago when my oldest two boys were in scouts. They had made the Wing and the Rail and came in 1st and 2nd respectively. This year we made four cars from your plans.

Assimilator

The Assimilator, made by Andrew, my Wolf Scout, came in 1st out of 40 in the scout race. His was the only car to come in under 2.5 seconds. This amazed me because he truly made the car himself with only guidance from me.

Predator

The Predator, made by me, came in 2nd out of 21 in the non-scout race

Wing

The Wing, made by my oldest son Aaron (17) (for the second time), came in 5th out of 21 in the non-scout race.

Rocket

The Rocket, made by me, came in 6th out of 21 in the non-scout race.
