External Measurement
- Close the jaws over the object.
- While applying pressure with the thumbwheel, wiggle the object slightly to ensure that the jaws read the minimum measurement.
- For higher accuracy, use the thin 'blade' tips of the jaws to make measurements. However, use caution when measuring soft material (such as pine derby wheels and wood) with the thin tips as they can cut the material.

Internal Measurement
- Insert the upper jaws into the pocket or hole and open the jaws.
- While applying pressure with the thumbwheel, wiggle the object slightly to ensure that the jaws read the maximum measurement.
|
|
Step Measurement
- Place the jaw end of caliper against the upper step and open or close the jaws so that the back jaw engages the lower step. In the photo, the distance from the wheel hub to the outside tread surface is being measured.

|
Depth Measurement
- Rest the non-jaw end of the caliper on the rim of the hole/pocket.
- Open the jaws until the depth blade reaches the bottom of the hole/pocket.

|
Scribing Measurements
- Open the jaws to the desired width and tighten the lock screw.
- Scribe the wood by placing one jaw on the side of the wood, and the tip of the other jaw on the wood surface.
- Avoid undesired scribe marks by touching the side of the block lightly.
